What is the Community Media Center?
The Community Media Center is a facility where residents, schools, government and non-profit organizations can access training, tools and cable channel time to use television to communicate with the community. Who can use the Media Center?
Local government departments, schools, residents of the Region and non-profit organizations located within the Region. The Region is defined as Sonoma County and Adjacent Regions. Where can I see CMC programming?
Programming created through or submitted to CMC is seen on the Santa Rosa Comcast residential cable system within Santa Rosa or on AT&T’s U-verse.
What's On TV?
On these channels, you will find a wide variety of noncommercial programming by, for and about the people and organizations in the Region. You will find entertainment programs, local meeting coverage, programs documenting and promoting the work of local groups, NASA space missions, educational programs, arts coverage and more. Overall, the programming represents the broad range of ideas, issues and opinions that matter to the community. In other words, CMC provides the training and tools…but the community provides the content. How can I get the program schedule?
The best way to find out “what’s on” is to become a CMC member. The link to the program schedule and newsletter will be emailed to you every 2 weeks (US Mail also available). Another excellent source for the program schedule is under the Programming Tab. It includes complete schedules along with sample programs and other helpful information. How is the Media Center funded? The largest share of funding for Media Center operations comes out of the cable franchise agreement between the City of Santa Rosa and Comcast Cable. The cable company pays this franchise fee as compensation to the community for its use of public rights-of-way. CMC receives a portion of this fee for staffing and for equipment replacement funding through the same agreement. The remainder of CMC’s operating budget comes from custom video and training services, membership fees and management of a high-speed network for public institutions. What Services are Available? CMC has a broad range of video production equipment including digital editing suites, field camcorders, an animation suite and two studios (one full size and one “mini” studio). CMC staff mentors provide training and technical advice to allow community members to create their own television programs. For an additional fee, CMC can provide cost-efficient technical services and customized workshops for non-profit organizations. CMC also manages cablecast of all programs. What does it cost to use the Media Center?
Any local non-profit organization or resident of the Region wishing to use CMC services must become a member. We offer a variety of membership choices to fit your needs. For those wishing to submit already produced programming and/or receive the program guide they may wish to join as a Basic member. Whereas Production memberships give access to training, equipment and facilities use along with channel time. Please refer to posted fee schedule for current membership fees. Why does it cost more for non-Santa Rosa Residents? Since 1997, the Media Center has received continuous financial support from the City of Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa City Schools, Santa Rosa Junior College and other local funding sources. With this expansion residents of other cities will benefit from the great facilities that have been subsidized for many years by these Santa Rosa institutions. We hope to be able to lower the non-Santa Rosa resident fees in the future once outlying cities contribute support to our now Regional Center. Does CMC have intern opportunities?
Yes! CMC maintains an internship program, which provides extensive hands-on production training and experience for qualified individuals/students. Interns are selected through an interview and production reel review process. School credit is possible. Interns are expected to commit a minimum of eight hours per week for at least one semester. How can I become involved? If you or your organization meets our residency requirement, you can take the orientation online under the Getting Started Tab or sign up for an orientation by calling 569-8785 x 325. If you are representing a school, city or county government department, call the same extension and you will be directed to our education or government staff. The Community Media Center of the North Bay is involved with numerous community projects that harness this powerful communication technology. CMC is committed to using the power of media and technology for the benefit of the Regional community. We welcome your involvement! |
